The marshal shall at the request of the mayor attend meetings of the city council; shall have charge of the city prison, police quarters and furniture and appurtenances hereunto belonging and cause the same to be kept in good order; execute all orders of the mayor and city council; preserve the peace and good order of the city; quell all riots; serve all processes issued by the city justice of the peace, and to him directed, and see that all orders and judgments of said court are carried into effect; and shall take such measures as shall secure the peace and good order of all public meetings and of the city generally.
